But if I say do open(F, "> /tmp/mylog.log"); in my startup script

Then F isnt going to be accessible by another package by print main::F ? or am I being stupid ?

As far as I know, you should be able to use main::F from then on (or at least until the file-handle get's closed). update: but it's probably a good idea to take a slightly more descriptive file-handle in some other package that you control.
