ghenry has asked for the wisdom of the Perl Monks concerning the following question:

Hi Monks,

Can anyone recommend a good replace for Squirrelmail, that uses Perl?

I have found Openwebmail, but it doesn't seem to do Maildir, which is a must, as well as GPG.

Thanks.

Re: SquirrelMail Replacement using Perl (Acmemail / Sparkle)

I have reasonable experience with SquirrelMail. It's quite good as far as functionality goes, but each time I have to try and tweak the look I cringe at the effort. A modern webmailer written in Perl, templates and stylesheets would be way cool.

There is only one contender that I know about. It's not a replacement, in that it's not finished, but Léon "Acme" Brocard started working on Acmemail a long time ago. The project ground to a halt, but was later rechristened as Sparkle, but it seems rather quiescent.

Still, I keep an eye on it from time to time to see if it's woken up again. I'm sure people with tuits to work on the project would be very welcome.

It is currently managed as a Sourceforge project.

I agree with you about changing the Look and Feel.

I am just curious to see if there's something similar.

I use Squirrelmail all the time, but I have never seen a Perl equivalent.

That doesn't mean I'd necessarily switch.
