in reply to Perl Jokes
Some of the monks at the Perl monastery observe a vow of silence. In other words, they are Carmelite Perl monks.
Once every ten years, however, each Carmelite Perl monk is allowed the indulgence of speaking two words.
After ten years, one monk, Brother Edvard, came before his superior, Brother Thelonious, and the others present at this juncture, and said, "Food cold." He then left quietly.
Ten more years passed as the Brother Edvard struggled to keep his vows. He became more somber. Again he was summoned as prescribed, to his superior, now an Abbot. When prompted, he said, "Bed hard," then left his audience in silence.
Another decade went by, and the monk's mood darkened further. He finally arrived at the Archabbot's office, and said, decisively, "I quit!"
The other monks, monsignors, curates, priests, and acolytes present looked up in surprise. Not the Archabbot, however, who said,
"I'm not surprised. You've done nothing but complain since you got here!"
