It appears http://perldoc.perl.org is slightly behind http://faq.perl.org

http://perldoc.perl.org:

perlfaq - frequently asked questions about Perl ($Date: 2004/10/05 22: +15:44 $)

http://faq.perl.org:

perlfaq - frequently asked questions about Perl ($Date: 2005/03/27 07: +21:21 $)

I've msg'd jj808, but he's probably up to his eyes with other stuff anyway ;-)

Re: perldoc.perl.org and faq.perl.org out of sync?

The perldoc site is the documentation that came with that particular version of Perl. The PerlFAQ site is the current sources in the perlfaq CVS. When I (or Robert) check in new things, that site updates itself.

I don't think that http://perldoc.perl.org should keep up with the the latest changes. People should get the same version of the docs that came with the latest stable version of perl.

What you don't see is that all of the docs on http://perldoc.perl.org lag behind the current sources. A lot of the perl manpages have been updated since then but you don't see it. The PerlFAQ site is a little bonus and it shouldn't be part of any policy to update anything. It doesn't have the sources that will go into the next version because it will change more, and we may even revert some changes, or make overwrite some changes. It's just a peek at the source repository because it's open source, but those versions aren't for official distribution until the pumpking accepts them and syncs the perlfaq sources with the main perl distro. Incidently, the PerlFAQ server that posts to usenet is in between the two versions. It usually isn't the latest versions, but it's newer than the distributed sources. Someone mentioned perl5porters, but these questions belong on perlfaq-workers or documentation (both @perl.org). :)

http://perldoc.perl.org is just a html2pod conversion of the perl source, so it's not really their fault.

    Maybe something for the perl5porters?

Maybe they could rsync parts of the site to releave some of the administration tasks?

It appears that the perldoc site tracks the current stable release (5.8.6 was released 2004-11-30 and 5.8.5 on 2004-07-21) infact the perfaq.pod does indeed have:

        perlfaq - frequently asked questions about Perl ($Date: 2004/10/05 22: +15:44 $)
Whereas the latest bleadperl (and http://cvs.perl.org/cvsweb/perlfaq/perlfaq.pod ) version has:
        perlfaq - frequently asked questions about Perl ($Date: 2005/03/27 07: +21:21 $)
so I guess that http://faq.perl.org tracks changes to the FAQ as they are made. Which makes sense to me and appears to be intentional thus not in need of fixing.
