It's important to note that \d can match characters other than the digits 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 and 9, which is probably not desireable.

That's locale-dependent, isn't it? Maybe that was your point, but is that such a bad thing? To me, it could almost be an unintended feature. I don't fault you for bringing up the point, but you did say it was "probably not disireable." I don't entirely agree with that. Thanks for the info, though.	[reply]
