n-tier is a matter of abstraction and separation of concerns between parts of your application. It does need to involve more than 1 machine.

Multiple machines means you can do failover for higher uptime, and it also means you have literally twice as much power to put into serving your application. There is a cost to the load-balancing, so it won't exactly double your scalability, but it can get close.
