One for the students out there.

Google are running a program called Summer of Code where there offering 4500 USD to develop open source software. More info on the participant FAQ.

The Perl Foundation appears to be one of the mentoring organisations (they get 500 USD per project).

I know four and a half grand (even if it's that silly American stuff :-) would have made been darn useful back when I was a student - and that's when it was a lot of money! So take a look.

Stonehenge has volunteered to be mentors for TPF. If you would like us to help you with your project, let me know. I'm especially interested in anyone in Chicago who might want to participate since we're also thinking about sponsoring students for their school's internship/class credit programs.

    I think it's a grand idea.

Although I'd rather not admit it, though, I was too immature when I was at university to actually perform any meaningful work on something like an open source project.

In fact I didn't become mildly useful at programming until about a year into my first professional job.

But still, when Google go out and sponser open source development you have to agree this is a great thing for the world in general! I love it! I'm a big fan of progressing the world as a whole, not just a monopoly organisation at a time.

And university students are bound to be influenced most by 4500USD type sums of money, as opposed to some of us professional programmers which would clear that in a month.
