Regardless of what your underlying sturcture is, you should always refer to your data via accessor. If for no other reason than it allows you to change your underlying structure, if you want. :-)

As for speed - the array implementation is about 15% faster and smaller. So, you save about 30 picoseconds over the life of a standard script. That and $3.50 will get you a Venti Mocha.
