PostgreSQL has pg_dump and pg_dumpall commands for this purpose, and MySQL has mysqlhotcopy, in both cases these are cross-platform as they will run on whatever you are running your database on.

For complement only... If you are trying to do backup pay attemption on Postgres' 22.3. On-line backup and point-in-time recovery (PITR). It's introduced on version 8.x and permit filesystem backup without lock tables (mysqlhotcopy do it!). -- Marco Antonio Rio-PM	[reply]
