GrandFather has asked for the wisdom of the Perl Monks concerning the following question:

Ok, the populus say publish (see Publish or Polish) the Word HTML to TWiki converter. I say where?

  • CPAN: its just modules isn't it?
  • Source-forge: I know nothing about submitting to it.
  • TWiki site: maybe.
  • The Monastery - Code: maybe. Will the right people see it?
  • Somwhere else I don't know about?

Perl is Huffman encoded by design.

An occasional rule of thumb is to publish to Cool Uses For Perl and get the monks comments on the code (in order to clean-up and get more ideas) and then publish it elsewhere, like CPAN Scripts, with a link to the updated version.

CPAN also has a scripts section: CPAN scripts.

I'd say sourceforge, it's like using cvs (you'll learn :-) ), and the right people will find it.
Use Cpan as well, a module like Image::Magick (more then a module) is to be found there as well.

"We all agree on the necessity of compromise. We just can't agree on when it's necessary to compromise." - Larry Wall.

Sourceforge is increasingly being socially deprecated. OpenFoundry is excellent, however. They use svn instead of cvs, don't have the annoying intermediate download pages, are hosted outside of the Americas, and more.

        $h=$ENV{HOME};my@q=split/\n\n/,`cat $h/.quotes`;$s="$h/." ."signature";$t=`cat $s`;print$t,"\n",$q[rand($#q)],"\n";
I had a look at OpenFoundary and too many of the pages have unprintable characters. Whilst I support the idea of spreading software development outside of the USA (I am an Australian myself) it is important for a web page interface to be clean and if that means reviewing the presentation for English-language speakers then so be it.

As for the location of hosting, I would be more comfortable with a site that was mirrored across continents..

Other possibilities include Savannah, Novell Forge and a few others Listed here which may be more or less suitable due to licensing and/or distribution constraints.

As has already been mentioned, CPAN has scripts. But the next logical question is, does it need to be a script? You could modularise it, and then have a script in your distribution that called the module. And that may make it easier for

      • others to modify it,
      • others to extend it, and
      • others to use it in wierd and wacky ways (e.g., convert a word file during upload as a filter for a CGI script directly into a TWiki hosted on the same, or different, machine, without actually using a temp file).
Then you may think CPAN makes logical sense. As for a repository for your code elsewhere, outside of your personal machine, Sourceforge makes as much sense as anywhere else, especially if you already have an ID there. If you don't, then it probably doesn't matter - pick a place and use it.

Of course, I'm one to talk - I do have an account on Sourceforge, but none of my perl code is up there. :-) I keep meaning to do it ... just never get around to it.

You can also post a link to it on the newsgroup comp.lang.perl.misc and ask for comments. You will get some, and it will be archived by google for "all eternity".
