There's been some direct or indirect (i.e. explicit or implicit) talking about rss feeds for PM lately. Now I notice that on Recently Active Threads and Newest Nodes (but not in other sections) at http://www.perlmonks.org/ (not at some external site) Firefox gently tells me I can add "live bookmarks" for those pages. Now, was this feature announced? Is it going to be eventually extended to all of PM?

Not explicitly no. It was requested by a user in a PMD thread and after i implemented it I noted that I had done so in reply. See Re: RSS Syndication

Umm? The feeds from RAT/NN give you the same data pretty much and they cover all submitted material so im not sure why there would need to be additional feeds. Also, the site link will be relative to the one you normally use, which in your case would appear to be .org

How do I get Firefox to "gently tell me" about "live bookmarks"?

Perl is Huffman encoded by design.
I don't know... mine did that right out of the box. An especially visible icon appears in the bottom right corner of the browser window, in the status bar, as soon as a page with rss feeds is loaded.
Argh, so did mine when I knew where to look!
