kakaro: welcome to the wonderful world that is Perl. Perl is powerful and versatile and I'm sure you'll enjoy. However, while I am aware that IDG just put out a new version of "Perl for Dummies", I'm not sure that this is your best choice. The first edition quickly went out of print and should have been titled "Perl by Dummies". It garnered terribly reviews.

You may want to check out this link for some excellent Perl resources, including "Learning Perl" (the Llama book), which was co-authored by none other than our very own merlyn.

Enjoy your stay, but don't feed the monkeys.

Update: Ugh, I feel all icky now. Adam is right, I didn't mean to imply that you should be buying stuff here, I sincerely meant that the "For Dummies" book may not be the best thing you could have. In rereading what I wrote, it does seem to imply that you should buy stuff here. Ugh :( I'm going to go take a shower now.

    A minor clarification:

    By linking to Buy Stuff, The esteemed Ovid is not implying that you have to buy books through our store. Perlmonks is a place to learn Perl, and to help others learn Perl. Some of this is funded by these book sales.

    I say this because I want it to be clear that Ovid specifically believes that "Perl for Dummies" might not be the best way to go, rather then "Oh, here's a sucker, lets get them to buy books from us!" There are few generalizations that cover the monks here, but one important statement is that no one who is at the higher ranks (see Saints in our book) will intentionally mislead you into spending money.

      Well, atm I am reading perl for Dummies, second edition. I have read up to page 120 and am learning list functions. I will take your advice, I must point out that i felt in no way pressured by your book advice and I feel I will enjoy my stay here. Many Thanks Perl Newbie Kakarot
