agaffney has asked for the wisdom of the Perl Monks concerning the following question:

Is there a module that will allow me to put an icon in the systray (freedesktop.org compliant...fluxbox, gnome, etc.)? Searching CPAN for 'systray' turned up nothing. I'm going to take a stab at writing a systray plugin for irssi, just because someone claimed xchat was better because of the systray integration :P

    There is Gtk2::TrayIcon for Gnome.

    This follows The System Tray Spec for freedesktop.org.

    There's also Gtk2::TrayManager on CPAN and perlpanel from Debian.

    Not sure about other desktop environments though.

      I've never messed with tray icons before, but I have used GTK+ (python bindings...not my choice). It seems that the tray icon runs as it's own separate program (runs the GTK main loop). How would I make this work as an irssi plugin?
