Atomic writes (and reads) are a function of the filesystem. Certain filesystems will do atomic I/O and others won't (without the rename trick). It's about as cut'n'dry as that.

My criteria for good software:
  1. Does it work?
  2. Can someone else come in, make a change, and be reasonably certain no bugs were introduced?
