I use perl to extract selected portions of a 3d topographic dataset which is colored according to altitude, and then passed on to pov-ray for 3d rendering. A gui (perl:Tk) allows rubber-band selection of the desired area on the earth's surface, and also generates a coastline outline in any of three selectable resolutions.
