What is the surveyor's bias: do they peddle, promote or have some prospect of pecuniary gain if their survey persuades (someone) to use pascal, lisp, farsi or ??? Well, no, actually I don't care, but asking these questions is good practice when evaluating polls/surveys/etc...	[reply]

Monks, What do you think about this heresay I'm not sure if that's supposed to be heresy or hearsay. In either case, I don't put much stock in surveys .. and was this survey conducted over the Internet? Yikes. I'd put much more trust in a show of hands at a developer conference -- at least that measures the people actually using the tools and not the PHBs as much. Considering that IT has been seeing a decline that past years, specially in dot-com companies and web related activities, I'm not at all surprised to see a drop in any usage in the IT world, specially not if it's used a lot in web related activities. So, Perl, PHP, Python going down isn't a surprise. Is it 5%? Is it 10% Is it 20%? Who knows. Should I care? No.	[reply]

EDC polled 400 developers in small, medium and large enterprises. I wonder which small, medium, and large enterprises were selected (and why), and how they qualified "developer".	[reply]

So what if Perl use is down? Business will still want to invest in products that will be purchased by a developing community. If the RATE of development is slowing, then sure the consumption of new products will decrease, but new products are needed anyway. Besides, reports like that are so fickle. update: let's go back to C. The world was better then.	[reply]
