I just leave emacs running in the Putty window, and have the time of day in the mode-line. The once-a-minute update is enough to keep Putty happy.

I do the same thing with screen, with this .screenrc: `caption always "%{G}%3n %t%? @%u%?%? %H [%h]%?%=%c" hardstatus string "[screen %n%?: %t%?] %h" startup_message off` [download] "What should it profit a man, if he should win a flame war, yet lose his cool?"	[reply] [d/l]
