You still miss the point. Taken in and out of context, your use of the phrase "academic hot air" was an insult. You don't acknowledge that you gave insult, much less apologize for that. From that, one can reasonably infer that you meant to give insult.

The phrase in question is not normally used in discourse as an innocent turn of speech. It conveys derision.
