Continuing an abandoned(?) CPAN module

rvosa has asked for the wisdom of the Perl Monks concerning the following question:

Dear monks,

I'm interested in using the perlish implementation of CORBA "COPE". The last release on CPAN seems to have been on 15 August 1997 (gasp! cpan archaeology). Further development has been going on outside CPAN at "We COPE", but that too seems to have closed shop. I'm trying to figure out if anyone is still working on COPE, and if not, how I can go about picking up the project (perhaps including transfer of nursing-rights on CPAN?). Any hints on how I might go about doing that? I've had contact with Bart Schuller, the original author - but he mentioned that he's left the project way back, and that if anyone knows the status it'd be a chap called Giles Atkinson - though any of the email addresses of his in relation to COPE seem to have gone defunct. What to do?

Hi Rutger, I'm happy to hand you the CVS files that I have, that would at least give you a little bit more info than just the latest release. Thank you very much for picking this up, every once in a while people still ask about COPE and it's a shame to have nowhere to point them to. It's great that Rutger is picking up and running with the ball on this one. In general, how would one go about taking up where someone else drops off? I would suspect, as Rutger has done here, that the Monestary is a good place to start, if there isn't a valid email for the author or pointer to a web page. Not that I am ready to (or able to!!) pick up the reigns of a module, but I believe that the knowledge would be good to know. Thanks for any input. If the author can be contacted and is willing to transfer, they can transfer ownership by changing permissions at PAUSE. If the module has been abandoned and the author cannot be contacted, emailing `modules@perl.org` about taking over maintenance and transfering permissions is right the way to get started. -xdg Code written by xdg and posted on PerlMonks is public domain.
