i tend to do that inline, too:

my $numb = '';
print 5 + ($numb||0); # no warning
[download]

I also do the same thing to avoid "Use of uninitialized value in concatenation (.) or string" warnings:

print "==> Foo: " . ($s || '') . "<===\n";
