There are a number of ways you can receive XP other than getting upvotes – read Voting/Experience System.

The foremost way is by voting.

Note, however, that none of these ways is even remotely as effective as posting good nodes: the average noderep is about 9, which translates to about 3 XP on average per node. So a handful of average nodes per day will yield more XP than all other possibilities combined.

Makeshifts last the longest.

    I am completely blown away (and pleased) at the rep that Panda's first node received. Some of writing a good node is posting it at the right time in the right place.

    Panda comment last night while working through the basic datatypes, three: "What use are arrays. Why don't you just use variables and save typing.". Panda comment this morning having slept on it: "I've just though of a program to use arrays. It does ...". You may hear more from this fellow :).
