If you enable debugging (DEBUG => 99), you can see how Template compiles the templates (that [% CALL list.pop %] becomes $stash->get(['list', 0, 'pop', 0]);, and [% list.pop %] becomes $output .= $stash->get(['list', 0, 'pop', 0]);).
