Try an additional print "env-remote_user: $ENV{REMOTE_USER}<br />"; which will also show you if it is set or not.

    CGI's remote_user is simply 

    sub remote_user {
    return $ENV{'REMOTE_USER'};
}

    [download]

    No difference.
