Others has mentioned the obvious pitfalls, but nobody has mentioned acl's. I've never used them, but it is a security enhancement which limits what different users can do in various directories. Is your Fedora a "security enhanced version"? See linux-acl

Maybe there is a default settings directory in /etc, which may be set up to be very restrictive by default.
