Hi all, In conjunction with someone else, we've initiated an Open Source project - it covers Server Administration from administration of Apache via a web interface, right through to user addition/deletion, FTP, Mail services & more. I'm a pretty useless programmer (the other person is vastly more experienced than I but needs some extra hands for the Perl stuff), but slowly learning. Any prospective volunteers would be best to have a level of familiarity with Mac OSX & *nix in general as well as have some time they could dedicate to writing some Perl modules for specific tasks. Any takers, please contact me either msg here or email hmag@ozemail.com.au - many thanks.

I'm not trying to be rude, snide, dismissive nor to discourage you from doing what you want to do. But there are quite a few projects with a similar charter. Why not join one already in progress and save yourself a lot of effort? That way, you can pick and choose some bits that really interest you, and focus on those.

Doing a big project like that will require that you do a bunch of bits that don't interest you. Stuff that's likely already done on another project. Just thought I'd mention it...

Above all, whatever path you take, have fun!

Hi again, No offence taken & none I think was intended anyway. The project we're undertaking is actually well advanced. It's a different style of administration that we're looking at, despite the similairites in description. Thanks for the reply anyway.
I don't have a Mac (yet), but I'm a Linux & Solaris hack. What kinds of chunks are you looking to get done? I'm always interested in doing a little amusing thing now and again. I'd bet if you dropped a few ideas of chunks that you're looking for, you'd get a few bites.

As for me, I'm a programmer during the day (C, C#, C++), so I don't code much at night, except for small bite-sized bits now and again that amuse me or teach me something interesting. (I'm wanting to gain proficiency in Perl, so I'm hanging out here trying to learn enough to answer interesting questions.) So to trap me 8^), the chunks you mention should be smallish, or have an amusing twist!

I think you'll be much more likely to attract interested people if you put up a project page of some sort, and the code you have so far (ideally a public SCM repository), and point people there. As roboticus already said, there are lots of projects like this. This is not a problem if your project is sufficiently different from the others and interesting in some way. But unless there is at least some minimal description of the project up somewhere I personally wouldn't even bother sending an email anywhere. The key in Open Source is "open" :-).

    All dogma is stupid.
Hi again, Fair points. It's pretty well advanced, but the last thing we've been thinking about at this point is a project page. We really wanted to get the first working model out there - I have registered a .org domain a couple of days back, but simply haven't had enough time to get any further than that. Sometime shortly, I'll register it as a Sourceforge project & there will be info about that. My learning curve on Perl is extremely steep, which is why I have sought a bit of help - dhoss here knows about it & will be giving a small hand, but someone with a bit of OSX knowledge would probably be able to get things done much quicker than I can.
