Is it possible that it's outputting on STDERR as well as STDOUT? You can try redirecting STDERR somewhere else in the command such as:

@foobar=`mac \"foo.ape\" -v 2>/dev/null`;

Or, if you want to capture STDERR as well:

@foobar=`mac \"foo.ape\" -v 2>&1`;

thanks for the reply. here is what i have right now @test=`mac \"$_\" -v >/dev/null 2>&1`; [download] this suppresses the output, but does not put anything in @test. i am not too sure what to do.	[reply] [d/l]

In @test=`mac \"$_\" -v >/dev/null 2>&1`; [download] stdout is directed to /dev/null, and then, stderr is directed to where stdout points to. So this one should work: @test=`mac \"$_\" -v 2>&1`; [download] BTW, to check the exit status instead of capturing the output, you can use system() instead of `` or qx//	[reply] [d/l] [select]

ok thanks. that fixed the problem. sorry that it was so easy to fix. that always happens to me. my perl problems are always easy to fix and then i feel like a worthless noob :(. thanks again -Syco54645	[reply]
