Of course, some people would find that obfuscated. Personally, I find your version harder to read. So, pick whichever is appropriate for the people expected to maintain this.
My criteria for good software:
  1. Does it work?
  2. Can someone else come in, make a change, and be reasonably certain no bugs were introduced?
