wazzuteke has asked for the wisdom of the Perl Monks concerning the following question:

Hopefully, this should be a relatively easy question. I tried Super Search, with no avail...

Can someone please enlighten me on the 'standard' method of changing authorship of a currently registered CPAN namespace? I've dug around PAUSE, though coulnd't find anything there either.

Is there an automated method? If not, should I contact a maintainer directly, or via list (eg. modules@perl.org)?

Thanks, all!

I believe writing to modules@perl.org is the only way to get this done. Be sure to tell them whether you've talked to the current maintainer and if not how hard you've tried to reach him or her.

Here's a relevent entry in the faq, which doesn't quite answer your question but might be helpful anyway:

    http://cpan.org/misc/cpan-faq.html#How_maintain_module

UPDATE: Re-reading your message, I see that you didn't specifically say that you wanted to take over someone else's module. If you just want to give someone else permission to update a module you have registered you can do that from PAUSE. Click on "Change Permissions" in the left-nav after you login.

The author has to give you permission within PAUSE. You can't just say "I'm updating your module". If the current maintainer is unreachable, then email modules@perl.org.

Note: If the current maintainer is reachable, but uncooperative, that's a different issue.

    My criteria for good software:
    1. Does it work?
    2. Can someone else come in, make a change, and be reasonably certain no bugs were introduced?

Further to samtregar's suggestion, it would help your cause considerably if the existing maintainer was to contact the modules list requesting the change of ownership rather than you doing so.

    Thanks, everyone!

I have had the fortune of getting ahold of the author, though we we're both in question of how to transfer the ownership. I'll let him know the details.

    Thanks again!
