in reply to How to sync a UNC path to a USB memory stick in Windows?

UPDATE: After verifying that it works perfectly on my workstation, I tried it with my boss, and it doesn't work. More specifically: Creating the briefcase works fine, and copying stuff to it works fine. However, the "Update All" menu item does not appear in the context menu when right clicking. The only thing I can think of right now is that the actual memory sticks the execs use are secured via fingerprint scanning. My next step is to try to get a secured USB stick assigned to me, or get my boss to try it on my machine.

Had anything changed between your copying the files and trying for the update all? Context menu items tend to only appear when thay can be used. If nothing had changed, then there would be nothing to update.

      Hey Browser!.

On my workstation, the context menu item appeared regardless of if there was updating to be done; I don't think it's like a daemon in that it constantly monitors the sync status. On my machine I could select 'Update All' and then after a short pause I would get a message that nothing had to be updated.

I am trying it right now on my work laptop here at home and getting the same problem (with a mapped drive to the same Samba share I was using for testing before). Am using a Kingston 512MB stick as opposed to some cheapie 64MB promotional stick I was using at work. Will update.

      Thanks again,

      T.

First off, my apologies to the monks who may be reading this thread who aren't finding it very Perl-centric. However, I feel it's appropriate to finish what I've started. If any of the admins disagree, feel free to reap the node.

So anyway I just noticed on my laptop, which is acting exactly like my boss' computer, in that there is no context menu item from right-clicking. HOWEVER, rather than there being briefcase options in the context menu from right clicking, whenever I have the briefcase selected in Windows Explorer, a new menu item called 'Briefcase' appears at the top of the window (between 'Tools' and 'Help'). THAT'S where the "Update All" (which is Black, or available) and the other briefcase options (which are greyed out) appear.

I don't know what dictates whether the options appear as a menu item or in a context menu, and am rather perplexed. If you by any chance know, I'd love to know as well.

Either way, I hope this is the solution. I won't know for sure until I try again with my boss tomorrow.

As always, thanks so much for your attention, and I will follow up, assuming I don't get a signal that I should just let this node lie.
