It sounds like you want something to tidy up the use of white space so the sucker is comprehensible to a human. XML::Tidy appears to be a module that will do exactly this.
As to why you would take this path rather than the one you did? Well, writing your code may well have been educational, but it fails to constructively apply the virtue of laziness. It's not a sin to do that. It simply means that you did work that was not necessarily necessary.
In addition, assuming that XML::Tidy does do the trick (something I cannot comment on one way or the other), using that allows you to put your energy into building on it rather than having to start by building it. That is the value added by using someone else's work to start from.
