And I'm sorry to hear GraphViz (graphviz on CPAN) does not appear to meet the OP's needs - what (little?) I've done with it so far has been most satisfactory.

Update 2: In addition to TouchGraph (SourceForge), I note there is also a project called JPowerGraph (SourceForge):
