Update: Use the example below or override _extra_sock_opts as he shows in Re^2: Using Virtual interface through WWW::Mechanize. I knew my sample code was old, but apparently LWP got patched to allow this kind of thing ages ago (ironically shortly (as in a couple weeks) after I wrote my version . . .).
