Perl 5.8.8 doesn't have this problem. Whatever it is, it appears to have been fixed. 5.6.1 is kind of "old".

    It appears to have been fixed in 5.8.0. 
    $1 = '' (defined)
$2 = 'bbbbb'
@- = (1, 1, 1)
@+ = (7, 1, 6)
