Mime::Lite is an important... and unmaintained module?

metaperl has asked for the wisdom of the Perl Monks concerning the following question:

Mime::Lite was just what I thought I needed to send authenticated multipart mail. However, it did not handle SMTP auth and I realized there was no code in this module for this. So I wrote a little bit of code for it in sub send_by_smtp

and then thought I would report it to the maintainer via RT but since there are 27 open bugs I don't think that filing another will do any good. this is a very key module for Perl/CPAN, why is the request queue so full of bugs?

But MIME::Lite does support SMTP Auth /J\	[reply]

Maybe you could volunteer to maintain it? Or maybe when all is said and done, it doesn't need much. I have been using MIME::Lite every day for four years and never had cause to complain about anything except my own inability to read the doc's. jdtoronto	[reply]

If you're unhappy with the support you're getting I'm sure you can easily obtain a complete refund of your Perl/CPAN support fee. Update: Not to mention looking at some of the bugs several appear to be of the Doctor-it-hurts-when-I-do-this variety, and others are rather lacking in the here-is-how-to-reproduce-it department. I thought the same thing when I looked it up on CPAN recently, but noticed the Latest Release link at the top of the page. Support for AuthUser and AuthPass starts in 3.01_03 (current is 3.01_05).	[reply]

I am the future maintainer of MIME::Lite, and I admit I still have to get into the swing of things — I still have to familiarize myself with a lot of the internals of the module. That's why there are still so many unresolved bugs. I promise you, it'll get better, but I beg you to have to show a little patience. Things will get better, soon.	[reply]
