    Email is plain text. Anything more than that is an attachment.

      Email is whatever you say in the header it is. It should be plain text or at least one of the multiplart/alternative parts should be plain text, but it does not have to be. I can send you an email whose BODY will be a GIF image if I feel like it. How would your mail client handle it is a different question but it will be a proper MIME encoded email.
