Suppose you want Perl to be the language in that project.

I would only suppose that if I thought that Perl would be the best language for that project - which would mean I had already assessed the risks/benefits.

Don't pick a language because you "want" to. Pick one that's best for the job.

      "Hi - I'm developing a life critical piece of software. I'm not going to build the best solution possible because my developers only know language Foo".

      Would you trust them to do a good job?
