i really don't know how interesting this will be to some monks, but i've always liked the Tolkien series...

My guess is that Larry Wall wanted to add some amusement for those divine souls that wander through perl source trying to increase the quality of our lives. Whoever it was, they put quotes from Tolkien's Lord of the Rings trilogy into the perl source. Some of my personal favorites include:

in run.c:
/*
* "Away now, Shadowfax! Run, greatheart, run as you have never run before!
* Now we are come to the lands where you were foaled, and every stone you
* know. Run now! Hope is in speed!" --Gandalf
*/

in op.c:
/*
* "You see: Mr. Drogo, he married poor Miss Primula Brandybuck. She was
* our Mr. Bilbo's first cousin on the mother's side (her mother being the
* youngest of the Old Took's daughters); and Mr. Drogo was his second
* cousin. So Mr. Frodo is his first *and* second cousin, once removed
* either way, as the saying is, if you follow me." --the Gaffer
*/

in utf8.c:
/*
* 'What a fix!' said Sam. 'That's the one place in all the lands we've ever
* heard of that we don't want to see any closer; and that's the one place
* we're trying to get to! And that's just where we can't get, nohow.'
*
* 'Well do I understand your speech,' he answered in the same language;
* 'yet few strangers do so. Why then do you not speak in the Common Tongue,
* as is the custom in the West, if you wish to be answered?'
*
* ...the travellers perceived that the floor was paved with stones of many
* hues; branching runes and strange devices intertwined beneath their feet.
*/

and finally, the ubiquitous, in regexec.c:
/*
* "One Ring to rule them all, One Ring to find them..."
*/

These seem to be the most appropriate and most amusing. Of those at perlmonks who go through perl source, what are your favorites? In fact, does your distribution have them? This is from perl-5.6.0 for reference.

Someone went through a lot of trouble to find apropos quotes; whoever that is, thank you.

    That would be Larry, and I presume he'd answer, "My Pleasure, or rather, Your Pleasure is mine, er, uh, yours too, or something like that."

    in mg.c:
    /*
    * "Sam sat on the ground and put his head in his hands. 'I wish I had never
    * come here, and I don't want to see no more magic,' he said, and fell silent."
    */

    One of my favorites, also in mg.c:
    /* And you'll never guess what the dog had */
    /* in its mouth... */

    It's not distribution restricted, but a part of the source code.

    My favorite is:

    "It all comes from here, the stench and the peril."

    ...which is in a very appropriate place, IMO. :)

    Here's an interesting quote by Larry Wall:

    "Nobody designs a natural language by themselves, unless their name happens to be Tolkien."

    (To see the quote in it's entire context, visit Natural Language Principles in Perl. Interesting reading.)

    Well, to speak of another PM fave for which source is available, I've always gotten off on grepping through the linux kernel source for 'bad words' ... tho' my suspicion is it's more fun with older kernels =)

      Alan Cox and Rusty Russel both have some quite colorful commentary in their code. I wonder if these are printed on the Penguin Poster in their entirety, albeit writ small, or of the comments were removed for stylistic or space reasons.
        I have the Penguin Poster on my wall, and looking at it closely - they stripped all the comments out first.
