Other than the great information Corion has given you, if you want to launch and drive GUI applications you can check out Win32::GuiTest for MS Windows and X11::GUITest for X. In addition to this you can also drive applications on Windows via Win32::OLE, Using OLE with Perl has some interesting pointers.
