My wife (better known as She Who Must Be Obeyed) and I decided to expand our family, as can be seen here. We had trouble picking a name for her, though. I thought of "Cato June" because 1) we're Colts fans, 2) he lays some wicked tackles, and 3) when we were at the humane society, she put a from-behind tackle on our older son that had to be seen to be believed. (His nose was thoroughly licked in the process.) After trying about a dozen names, none of which really worked, we settled on Perl. Well, of course. The best part is, it was my wife's idea (ah, geek love!) and we can always say that we wanted a name that none of our friends or family (or their pets) have. Which, if you haven't done it, is not as easy as it sounds.

Anyway, she is an absolute sweetie and has won our hearts completely, and I cannot think of a better use of perl than naming you family dog.

    You know, I'm reading this, and thinking "I'll just click on the 'as can be seen here' link later" -- "why would a little baby tackle someone. Wait a minute, why was a newborn brought to the humane society?!?" -- "Thoroughly licked - must be some colloquialism for 'bloody nose'?" -- "I'd hate to name a baby girl Perl, in this day and age" -- "How would friends and family pet names' impact a child's name?".

    And then I get to the last word of your post.

    Can you tell that I've got another kind of family addition on the brain lately? ;)

    Congratulations on your rescue! My wife and I took one in almost a year ago and we've really enjoyed having him around.

    And indeed, that is quite a Cool Use For "Perl" ;)

      Ha! I got my dad, too. We were at the humane society, processing paperwork, and I called him.

      "Dad, are you sitting down? You're going to be a grandparent again."
      "AlRIIIIGHT! That is fantastic! Fan-tastic! When are you expecting?"
      "About twenty minutes."
      "WHAT?!?!"
      "Eva and I are adopting a beagle puppy at The Humane Society."
      "You dirty-- Hahaha-- Is she trained to hunt rabbits yet?"

      And congratulations on your family addition. We've talked about that, too, but we already have two kids. Besides, dogs will listen and are easier to train.

    Yikes... with those blue eyes, the dog looks like it came from Krypton with Superman, and can shoot "tackling ray beams" from his eyes. :-)

    Hmm, I'll have to keep this in mind. My SO has asked me to keep names in mind her her "mythical next dog" (she trains Field Spaniels). :-) (i'll have to look at the link later because flickr is verboten at work)
