Over at IBM developer Works an article caught my eye:

"Use Perl and FluidSynth to create a real-time musical composition of your system status. Learn how to integrate various system monitoring data into a harmony-producing, MIDI-controlled audio synthesis. Explore audible information methods and configurations to help you monitor and manage your computing environment."

This put me in mind of the 'Anthem' software from the Douglas Adams book Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency. Anyway, I hope this will be of interest to some, even if only for fun :)

    That reminds me of another similar (although looking at SF, not updated in several years) project called Peep.

      Ah yes, I remember reading about this project a number of years ago. I think it was referenced in an article I read about listening to your firewall. Thanks for reminding me :)
