If you currently output utf-8 encoded html, just make sure you set either the Content-tye: text/html; charset=utf-8 header, use an equivalent META tag, or write an UTF-8 BOM. My recommendation is to use the META tag, since it's most likely to be preserved.

For XHTML you can also use an <?xml encoding="..."?> prolog.
