I share the OP's pain. At work, until recently I was stuck on a Redhat8 system with perl 5.5.3...still on the same old system, but managed to convince the powers that be to let me install a 5.8 build alongside it

nonetheless, maintaining code is hard enough without maintaining it on 3 or 4 different perl builds
