That open(DATA) line should be:
open(*DATA,$files{$_}) or die;
You get the point though.

      wait, why are we opening DATA, isn't that listed in perldata as a magical filehandle, attached to all the cruft after __DATA__ or __END__ at the end of your script?

      not that it matters here, but it's woth noting ... also, perhaps a lexical filehandle
