bladx has asked for the wisdom of the Perl Monks concerning the following question:

Has there been a new development of an updated CGI.pm lately? Or will there be in the forseeable future either written by the creators of it, or certain perlmonks.org Perl programmers? It may sound like a small irrelevant question, but it is very important in the scope of finding out this information for a Perl programmer :-) Thanks!

http://search.cpan.org is the ultimate searching repository of Perl modules. If you search for "CGI" on that site, you'll get a list of all the modules with "CGI" in the name, and you'll get a nice overview of when they were last updated and who's working on them.

Looking at that page, it was last updated on 04/02/2001 (that's d/m/y). That recent enough for ya?

with something as widely used as CGI, though, the focus will be on stability and correctness rather than adding new features. Is there something CGI doesn't do that you want it to do? (and with this particular module are you sure it doesn't do it ? is a good question to ask first =)

Lincoln Stein (the author of CGI.pm) has said on a number of occasions that he'd like to break CGI.pm down into a number of smaller modules. I've got no information on how far he has progressed on this project. A new version of CGI.pm (2.75) was released only a few weeks ago.

There was also some talk a few months ago of someone else (Schwern, I think) making an attempt at creating a new set of CGI modules, but nothing seems to have come of that project yet.

The most significant update in CGI.pm recently is that since version 2.69 (current is 2.752) it generates XHTML by default. This may cause problems if you parse the generated documents with clumsy regexps, as all tag names are now in lower case and empty tags now follow the XML syntax: <BR> is now <br />.
