in reply to Perl Links Page

After seeing this, I wondered what bladx might have done to conclude that there was no "Links" page... (visualize one of those "wavy-vertical-lines fades" as we transition to my imaginings)

So I entered "links" in the search box at the top of the page. Now, use your mouse to select your other browser window. Press CTRL+Home on your keyboard to scroll to the top of the page so that the large colored bar near the top of the page is visible. Click inside the smaller rectangle inside and near the left edge of this bar (the one beside the big "search" label). Type "links" (without the quotes) and note that the word appears in the box you just selected. Then press your Return key to see the results of your search. Well, that gave me links to pages called "Links" that both had more to do with the internal workings of the site than anything else.

You see, the search mechanism is "smart" in that, if it finds one exact match, it takes you directly to that page. If it finds more than one exact match, then it only lists those exact matches. If it finds no exact matches, then it tries to find all nodes that mention one or more of your search words in their titles. My first reaction was to run to Super Search (you can reach that page from anywhere on the site by typing "super search" in the "search" box and pressing your Enter key, but please don't do that yet) where I could search for nodes "with 'links' in the title" and avoid the regular search's niceness of limiting results to exact matches since there happen to be exact matches.

Then I remembered my little trick (it is things like this that make this "Teach Yourself PerlMonks in 30 Days" course really worth the money you paid for it) and searched for "links fkei1l". Following the same steps as before, search for "links fkei1l" (without the quotes) in your other browser window. Since there is no node with the exact title of "links fkei1l" (if there is, please repeat the search replacing "fkei1l" with a non-sense non-word of your own choosing), the regular search list all nodes that have the word "links" in their title.

The second "hit" was Outside Links. Just thought this might be helpful.

Update: I'd just like to take this minute to congratulate and thank neophyte for the very fine job she has done with the Outside Links page.

    Ok, sorry I feel so dumb :( i just learned about super search today from a friend... i'm a newbie. I did a regular search and came up with nothing either... but I just didn't remember the super search. My fault, I blew it, I learned from it, it's over :) Thanks again tye and eg! bye now.

    bladx ~ still learning... :( :)

    Tye,

    For such an elementary discussion, your response is actually quite helpful on a couple of points. As another relative newbie, I appreciate a chance to absorb a little more lore and technique for this site. I'm not averse to taking responsibility for my own learning, but there's not always enough time for exploring the various possibilities.

    I especially appreciate the 'forced fuzzy search' trick and the use of the normal search box to go straight to known pages. Would'a figured those things out eventually but...

    Thanks & ++.
