why are there two domains for the same content and yet treat users differently

You get treated exactly the same on all domains. It's the exact same code on all of them.

If you're asking why there are multiple domains? dunno.

What triggers this domain switching?

Following a bad link someone made in a post or in the CB, like the one you created in the parent post.

    I'm afraid I'm not following you. Is it just a statement of example or you're referring to an actual bad link I created somewhere in my nodes?. Just to make sure, I reread my postings which fortunately small number, so I can force myself open them all and double check all links in there. And I found no bad links.

    Other than that, you put most parts on the puzzle, so thanks :-)
