shobhit, Randal has written an excelent article ("Show me your references") on references in his Unix Review columns.

Hashes of subrefs are often called dispatch tables and there's a good node on it at Implementing Dispatch Tables. I also (ab)used references in in a recent node to do some callback funkyness.
