Along the lines of robot_tourist's suggestion, games are probably a good choice. They should generate a lot of interest, particularly from a younger group. A simple basic game such as tic-tac-toe could work for beginners. The beauty is that there are an endless variety of games to choose from. Another possibility is to ask them to choose or make up their own game and use it to demonstrate specific programming concepts.
