I don't believe this.There's a lot of OSF software for unicode characters.
...and if you want to avoid spreading out of different types of unicode character sets for programming, there is a remedy:
Make standards, do them early....

    You've obviously never tried to fix a critical bug while away visiting friends for the weekend, or from your PDA, or ever wanted to have a nice relaxing hacking session on a borrowed laptop at a conference.

    It was having to do all those that made me stop using pound signs as delimiters some years ago.
