The Spartans had a very deep dark side. The one segment from the History Channel show on this, was a description of a "Spartan's child-play incident". Some boys were playing some kid game, and the loser was so enraged by losing, he killed the winner with his bare hands. The mother of the killer-boy, was so proud and patted her son on the head saying... "you'll be a good Spartan, I'm proud of you". No punishment.

Can you imagine what Little League games would be like if we adopted that attitude?

    well thats exactly what a friend of mine meant when she said that the movie points out that the greeks werent the glorified bringers of civilisation as which they are normally portraied. Oh she also said that a spartan would have loved the film since it really captures the spartan mindset. Moreso than when it would have been a "historic" movie. Since historic moviemakers stay away from things like bloodlust and such.

      I would say your friend confused Sparta with Athens. Spartans didn't write anything, not even their laws. Even though they were very educated, I think I've never read anywhere they were considered as bringers of civilisation.

      The movie portrays fascination with the ancient world and the imagination of the cartoonist and the movie director only.

      Sparta was brutal, the whole world was brutal. The warriors and philosophers were the same. Saints and sinners were implemented a little later :-)
